A couple of years ago I damaged the tendons in my ankle which was aggravated by exercise and excess weight.
When I phoned Team Breakthrough initially I was in a very miserable place and the more I weighed the more difficult my walking became yet I couldn’t exercise or seem to lose the weight on my own.
I was told by the hospital that my only option to deal with the problem was surgery and if that wasn’t successful I may not be able to walk on my leg. I had tried every fad diet available and was still 3.5 stone overweight and worried about my future mobility.
I rang Dave Wilby just a few days before going on a holiday which I was dreading as I couldn’t walk very far let alone in the heat. We had a long chat and he agreed to fit me in before I went.
At that meeting he assessed my injury, proposed a plan to address my posture and muscle support and enable me to train effectively. We also looked at my overall diet which I naively thought was quite good but was still making me put on weight and feel sluggish.
Once we had a plan I went on my holidays knowing I had a solution for when I returned. I completed a menu plan using the information given and ordered the shopping to be delivered on my first day back from holiday! I then started on a one to one training plan which took account of my ankle limitation.
I found this approach to be completely empowering as I had come to believe that I was stuck in a downward cycle of debility from which there was no return. I had thought that all gyms and exercise programmes involved hours of cardio running steppers etc. which I just couldn’t do.
The diet proved to be a big change but I embraced it fully and honestly have never felt so energised and healthy. Whilst all very positive it’s not to say that everything is easy and some habits are harder to break than others, but for once I felt in control of my own destiny and knew that the diet and training were combining to make me stronger and healthier.
The diet made me lighter so I could do more without putting strain on my joint and the training helped reduce the weight so it was a win win. I have particularly trained with Katie, George and Liam who have been a fabulous support and who seem to know my limits and abilities better than I do.
After constant telling yourself you can’t do something you start to believe it and by constantly stretching yourself physically and mentally provides a new mantra to live by. I still have a way to go and there have been a few stalling steps along the way but I feel this is a way of life now and cannot thank the team enough for taking away the ‘no I can’t achieve that’ and replacing it with a ‘yes you can this is all within your power and control’.
